The Communal House in Vietnamese Culture [The Essence of Vietnamese Villages]

“Cây đa, giếng nước, sân đình” is a familiar and close image to all Vietnamese people, especially the ancient communal house. The communal house is not only a sacred place of worship, a cultural and spiritual activity space, but also a “witness of history,” representing a unique cultural feature of the people of Vietnam.

The Communal House in Vietnamese Culture

Communal houses are typically built in central locations, on the most beautiful plots of land, surrounded by lush greenery. Inside the communal house, deities and individuals who contributed to settling and founding the village are worshiped. Over time, the act of worshiping and expressing gratitude in the communal house has gradually become an essential practice, representing the Vietnamese moral tradition of “drinking water, remembering its source.”

Through the ups and downs of time, the communal house has become a bond that connects the community. Every major festival, event, or when the village faces invaders or bad elements, people gather at the communal house, considering it the safest place. To make important decisions, village elders would also meet here, making the communal house the most powerful space in a traditional Vietnamese village.

At Yen Tu Village, the communal house is located in the center, surrounded by Streamside restaurant, local market stalls, and especially the Kid’s House experience area. Yen Tu Village believes that children are the future of the homeland and the nation. Their innocence, full of vitality, is given an important place right after the communal house, where they can freely play in a safe and cozy environment.
